Ingredients

  • 230 g plain flour
  • 170 g unsalted butter
  • 150 g brown sugar
  • 40 g rolled oats
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 250 g diced apples
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Method

  1. Step 1

    Heat the oven to 175°C and line a square baking tin with baking paper.

  2. Step 2

    Rub the butter into the flour, sugar, and salt until the mixture looks like damp crumbs.

  3. Step 3

    Press two thirds of the crumb mixture into the tin to form the base.

  4. Step 4

    Cook the apples with the sugar, cinnamon, and cornstarch until the fruit softens and the juices turn syrupy.

  5. Step 5

    Spread the apple filling over the base and scatter over the remaining crumble.

  6. Step 6

    Bake for 30 to 38 minutes until the top is golden and the filling is bubbling at the edges.

  7. Step 7

    Cool completely in the tin before cutting into bars.
